JEAN-PIERRE SWENNEN
Jean-Pierre came to the United States from Belgium when he was 20. From an early age, he was very much attracted to this country based on its character, values, and opportunities. His intention in co-founding “This Is MY Government” is to make a contribution to perpetuating and enhancing the character and values that inspired him to come here. He has always had an interest in government and public policy issues, and will use this site to explore these issues and to encourage a constructive debate about how we can improve our governmental processes.Jean-Pierre practiced federal administrative law with a large Washington, D.C., law firm for 27 years. Before that, he held several management and technical positions in the aerospace industry. He holds a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor degree from The National Law Center at The George Washington University.
Since his early retirement in 2001, he has been engaged in nonprofit and volunteer activities. He has been a director of The Inside Edge Foundation for Education and ReclaimDemocracy.org, a founder of a community group “We The People,” and a community group coordinator for the Institute of Noetic Sciences. He developed a number of courses for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of California, Irvine, and has been a mediator and a teacher of Non-Violent Communication. Most recently, Jean-Pierre is a founder and director of This Is MY Government, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting government by and for the people through education, collaboration, and activism.
Jean-Pierre is fluent in Dutch and French. He lives in Sebastopol, California with his partner, Jane Kennedy. In his spare time, he enjoys his study of the cello, lifelong learning, bicycling, yoga, and travel.
